Cup Series driver Christopher Bell has raised concerns following the chaotic NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Martinsville, emphasizing that action must be taken to curb reckless driving.
Bell called Saturday’s race “absolutely embarrassing” after Sammy Smith collided with race leader Taylor Gray on the final lap, leading to a loss of positions for both drivers.
As a result of the contact, multiple cars were caught in a chain-reaction crash, while Austin Hill took advantage of the situation, slipping through on the inside to claim victory.
Several prominent NASCAR figures, including Denny Hamlin, Jeff Gluck, and Todd Bodine, criticized the incident, joining a growing chorus of concern over the race’s lack of discipline.
Bell voiced his frustration in an interview with Claire B Lang, saying he was furious while watching the race and that the reckless driving was disgraceful and unacceptable for the sport.
When asked about possible solutions, Bell admitted he was unsure but stressed that NASCAR must take action, noting that Cup Series races have maintained a higher standard of clean and fair competition.
Regarding whether he would personally address younger drivers about responsible racing, Bell stated it hadn’t occurred to him to confront them after the race, but he hopes the Cup Series can set a better example.
Smith ultimately finished in 10th place, while Gray dropped to 29th. Their rivalry nearly turned physical when Gray confronted Smith outside the infield care center, but security intervened before a fight could break out.
The heated confrontation has fueled speculation about whether tensions between Smith and Gray will continue to escalate in upcoming races, both on and off the track.
