Hamlin Responds to Critics of NASCAR’s All-Star Format: ‘We Know It’s Coming’

Denny Hamlin recently shared histhoughts on the updated All-Star Race format at North Wilkesboro Speedway. Speaking on his Actions Detrimental podcast in late April, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver and 23XI Racing co-owner admitted the format includes some “gimmicky” aspects but believes it’s not over the top. “The All-Star format’s okay,” Hamlin said. “Yeah, there’s a gimmick in there, but it’s not too gimmicky. Some people are saying, ‘This is NASCAR opening Pandora’s box—they’ll just throw a caution whenever they want.’”

Hamlin went on to say that while the situation isn’t ideal, teams can prepare accordingly. “It could be worse,” he added. “We know a caution is coming if none happens between Laps 175 and 220, so teams should plan for that.”

Details on the New All-Star Format

The 2025 NASCAR All-Star Race will feature a 250-lap main event—up from 200 laps.

It includes a planned competition break around Lap 100 and potentially a “promoter’s caution,” which must occur before Lap 220 unless a natural caution happens after Lap 200.

He highlighted the return to North Wilkesboro for the third year as a tribute to the sport’s heritage, while also noting the added excitement from features like the new Manufacturer Showdown. Probst said fans can expect more strategy, teamwork, and drama this year.
