Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) is facing growing pressure as speculation rises about team owner Joe Gibbs and his grandson, Ty Gibbs.
The 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season has been challenging for Ty Gibbs, leading fans and analysts to question whether Joe Gibbs will need to make a difficult decision regarding his young driver.
With 77 Cup Series starts for JGR, Ty Gibbs has yet to secure a win. His struggles have drawn comparisons to past JGR drivers who underperformed, and he is now just two races away from surpassing JJ Yeley’s record of 78 winless starts with the team.
Colby Evans pointed out on Twitter that Ty Gibbs is just three races away from holding the record for the longest tenure at JGR without a victory.
After his most recent race, Ty Gibbs expressed frustration, saying he felt disadvantaged on the track, struggled with rear grip, and believed his car was nearly undrivable after 10 laps.
The 2025 season has been particularly rough, with his best finish being 16th at Daytona. Since then, things have worsened, as he crashed at Atlanta (32nd), struggled at COTA (34th), and finished 25th at Phoenix.
At 22 years old, Ty Gibbs’ struggles are more evident when compared to his teammate Christopher Bell, who has already won three of the first four races this season. Additionally, Chase Briscoe’s Daytona 500 pole position further highlights Ty’s underperformance.
Now, Joe Gibbs faces a tough choice. As both a team owner and a grandfather, he must decide whether to continue supporting Ty or take action to uphold JGR’s reputation.
New crew chief Tyler Allen was expected to bring consistency to the team, but so far, the results have not improved.
Some insiders believe that if Ty’s performance doesn’t improve soon, JGR might consider benching him.
However, NASCAR analyst Dan ‘Spider’ DiOrio pointed out that while Ty Gibbs’ recent results are concerning, he has shown promise in the past, referencing his top-five finish at COTA and a top-10 at Las Vegas last season.
With fans questioning Ty Gibbs’ future at JGR, the spotlight is now on Joe Gibbs. Will the legendary coach guide Ty through this rough patch, or will he be forced to make the toughest decision of his NASCAR career?
