On Sunday night, after finishing 21st in the Straight Talk Wireless 400 NASCAR Cup Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Kyle Busch posted on social media that he had an announcement coming on Monday night.
He scheduled the announcement for 6:51 p.m. ET but used military time, 18:51, which led fans to speculate about its meaning.
Since 18 and 51 were key numbers for Kyle Busch Motorsports before the team shut down and sold its assets to Spire Motorsports in 2023, many fans assumed the announcement would involve a potential team comeback.
Some fans, however, made wilder guesses, including a humorous prediction that Kyle would leave NASCAR to become a SpaceX rocket pilot in Elon Musk’s Space Racing League.
Ultimately, Kyle’s announcement was something unexpected—he and his nine-year-old son, Brexton, would be racing against each other for the first time.
The father-son race is set to take place at Millbridge Speedway, a well-known dirt track in Salisbury, North Carolina, measuring 0.167 miles (0.269 kilometers).
Both Kyle and Brexton previously won track championships at Millbridge in October, but this time, they will compete in the micro sprint class, with Kyle driving the No. 51 and Brexton in the No. 18.
The event, sponsored by longtime partner Servpro, will be broadcast live on DIRTVision on Wednesday, March 26.
Kyle expressed his excitement on social media, emphasizing the unique father-versus-son dynamic, the track champion facing a rookie, and inviting fans to watch the “Battle of the Buschs.”
Brexton has already been racing for several years, and Kyle has openly shared his hopes that his son will eventually follow in his footsteps to NASCAR’s top level.
Racing against the most successful driver in NASCAR national series history is a significant milestone for Brexton, even though he is still too young for the Truck Series, where Kyle also dreams of competing against him one day.
