There’s been some confusion surrounding a recent Toyota commercial and whether Jimmie Johnso’s NASCAR team, Legacy Motor Club, has formed a technical alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing. While both teams now compete under the Toyota Gazoo Racing banner following Legacy’s switch from Chevrolet to Toyota for the 2024 season, there is no technical alliance between the two.
Legacy Motor Club chose not to enter into a technical partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing, unlike 23XI Racing, which has had such an alliance with Gibbs since joining the Cup Series in 2021. The recent commercial, titled “Toyota Gazoo Racing: Big 3,” was created to showcase Toyota’s presence in the Cup Series and highlight its three affiliated teams—Joe Gibbs Racing, 23XI Racing, and Legacy Motor Club—not to imply any deeper connection or alliance between them.
So, while Legacy and Gibbs are both Toyota teams, they operate independently when it comes to technical resources and team operations.
