Corey Heim sparks Kansas crash involving Bubba Wallace, others
In his Cup Series season debut with 23XI Racing, Truck Series standout Corey Heim was involved in a crash with Justin Haley at Kansas Speedway that ended up collecting several drivers, including Heim’s teammate Bubba Wallace and Austin Dillon. The wreck forced Wallace out of the race, resulting in a second consecutive 33rd-place finish that dropped him from seventh to tenth in the standings.
Wallace reflected on the incident, saying, “I’m not sure if the 67 (Heim) made contact with someone, but I tried to dive left and stay on the throttle, and I got clipped in the right rear. It’s frustrating. This goes back to our earlier penalty. We fought hard but didn’t have luck on our side. We were confident heading in. Yesterday felt good, but it just didn’t come together today. It’s been a rough couple of weeks. Happy Mother’s Day though—looking forward to heading home to see my wife and our baby boy.”
Heim, meanwhile, wasn’t entirely clear on what caused the crash. “I’m not sure who I ended up taking out, and that’s never the intention. I felt like I got squeezed trying to move down, and when someone’s on your left rear, the car gets tight. I reacted, and it caused a big wreck. I’d like to think I wasn’t at fault, but I haven’t reviewed it yet.”
Despite the incident, Heim managed to finish 13th, the best among his teammates in what he described as a learning experience. “I spent the early part of the race trying to get comfortable. The Cup car is totally different from the Truck Series—handling, aero, and grip are all a challenge. The first stage was rough, and I went a lap down, but the team made great adjustments.
We steadily moved up the field. I’m proud of 23XI and thankful for the support from Toyota and Robinhood. The Robin Neon car looked great out there in the top-15. I’m grateful the team stuck with me and believed in me through a tough Start.
