A grass fire near Homestead-Miami Speedway continued burning into Wednesday night, but the NASCAR Cup Series weekend is still set to proceed as planned.
Intermittent closures of U.S. Highway 1 have allowed firefighters and emergency crews to work on containing the fire. Flames burning beneath high-voltage power lines have led to brief outages in the area, and while only minor damage to towers is expected, cellular and internet service may be impacted.
These challenges create logistical concerns for the race weekend, not to mention the possibility that emergency response teams typically assigned to the event may need to shift their focus to fighting the fire if it spreads further.
