William Byron made history by winning the Daytona 500 for the second consecutive year, becoming only the fifth driver to achieve back-to-back victories in the race’s 67-year history.

Starting the final lap in ninth place, Byron made his way up to seventh by the back straightaway, knowing that anything could happen in a race like this.

A wreck ahead of him took out six cars, allowing Byron to maneuver around on the outside and take the lead. With no caution flag thrown, he held off Tyler Reddick to secure the win.

Byron emphasized the importance of putting himself in a good position to compete at the end of the race, maintaining optimism, and making strategic moves.

He acknowledged that he was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time, but also credited a key move he made just before the wreck that positioned him for the victory.

Although superspeedway races involve some luck, Byron’s five wins on these tracks—tied for the second most among active drivers—prove his skill plays a major role.

He believes in controlling what he can and making the most of opportunities, even though crashes and bad finishes happen in racing.

Beyond racing, Byron attributes much of his success to his Christian faith, which has guided him throughout his career.

Growing up in a Christian home and attending a Presbyterian church, Byron’s faith deepened as he pursued his racing career.

He attended Liberty University, a Christian school, which has sponsored his racing career since before he reached the NASCAR Cup Series. His first Cup Series win came at Daytona in 2020 with Liberty as his primary sponsor.

Byron’s journey to NASCAR’s top level was unconventional, beginning with iRacing before transitioning to real-life racing in Legends cars.

Despite winning over 100 iRacing races, he quickly proved to be even more talented in real-world competition.

His early career involved working with local crew chiefs in North Carolina, who helped him move up the racing ladder.

Byron’s passion for NASCAR was evident even in his virtual racing days, where he focused mainly on NASCAR-style competition.

His success in lower series included a K&N Pro Series East championship in 2015, a near-Truck Series title in 2016 (lost due to engine failure), and an Xfinity Series championship in 2017 before joining Hendrick Motorsports in 2018.

During NASCAR’s shutdown in early 2020, Byron dominated the iRacing Pro Invitational Series before winning his first real Cup Series race later that year.

Despite winning the Daytona 500 last year, Byron wasn’t considered a favorite for this year’s race, a fact that motivated him.

He has used being overlooked as extra motivation, though he has also been the favorite at times. Either way, he finds fuel in proving himself.

However, his primary motivation remains his faith in Jesus Christ, which he has openly shared throughout his career.

Even in his rookie Daytona 500 in 2018, he received recognition from evangelist Franklin Graham for publicly expressing his faith.

Seven years later, Byron remains steadfast in his faith, as reflected in his social media bios and personal decisions.

His faith has helped guide him through his career and personal life, influencing the people he surrounds himself with and the dreams he pursues.

With consecutive Daytona 500 wins, Byron joins an elite group of back-to-back winners, including Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, Sterling Marlin, and Denny Hamlin.

Now, he has a chance to become the first driver to win three straight Daytona 500s, but he made sure to fully enjoy this year’s victory first.

Compared to last year, this win felt even more special, as he took more time to reflect and appreciate the achievement.

The past few weeks have been busy, but Byron has enjoyed celebrating with his team and participating in media events, recognizing how rare this opportunity is.

Last season, he won two additional races and reached the Championship 4 for the second straight year but fell short of a Cup Series title.

This year, Byron leads the standings after four races and remains one of the top championship contenders.
